Collars/Leads/Leashes - Tips from the Pros

30' Floating Lead
Tellus Calhoun - Avery's Team WaterDog

Avery's Floating Lead is a cornerstone in the tools we use to develop a successful retriever. The lead should be used once the dog has had repetitive success with basic obedience on the short lead and choke collar. The lead will allow you to maintain control at greater distances and improve the dog's stability. The lead is useful when enforcing the sit and here commands.

This is done by sitting the dog and backing away slowly. You can ensure a prompt return and also reel the dog back in and place him in the original sit position if he doesn't remain sitting before they have been called to us. It's important to start at short distances and gradually increase the distance and time you require the dog to obey and remain steady.

Reversible Collar
Christian Curtis, Avery Pro Staff, Avery Sporting Dog Specialist

Being an avid waterfowler as well as an upland hunter, I need a collar that fits the needs of both sports. On one side, the Reversible Collar provides the lead attachment and camouflage concealment needed for waterfowl hunting while the opposite side is Blaze Orange. This color provides the visibility which is imperative in keeping your hunting partner safe on those days in the CRP grass chasing upland birds.

Coated Dog Collar

Avery Coated Dog Collars are some of the toughest collars on the market. The PVC sealed poly webbing keeps the collar looking new, be it camo, blaze, or green brighter longer than any other collar I have ever owned. The coating keeps the collar from soaking up water and keeps the collar form rotting or mildewing for years of use.

Avery 24" Quick-Release Trainer's Lead
Kirk Steffensen, Avery Pro Staff, Avery Sporting Dog Specialist

Controlling a dog during the obedience process is always best achieved with a short lead. Short leads allow the trainer to guide the dog more effectively and teach specific commands while maintaining control. This lead not only provides functionality during the basic obedience process, but also in the field. AveryÕs short lead incorporates a quick disconnect clip for rapid release of your dog. As a goose hunting guide, I always stake my dogs while actively hunting in Finisher blinds. No matter what level of training a dog receives, a hunting type scenario by its basic design encourages dogs to do things that they might not normally do in training. The camouflage design and the quick disconnect clip features allow me to hide the leash effectively in the field and release my dog for a retrieve without having to fumble for a snap or have the dog drag a longer length of lead which might be dangerous. Avery has again improved upon even the simplest design!
